Mr. Pakamile Pongwana

Chief Executive Officer

 

Mr Pakamile Pongwana is the Chief Executive Officer for the Entity. He joined Ntinga in August  2019. He holds a Bachelor of Accounting Science (B Compt) Degree obtained from the University of Transkei now known as Walter Sisulu University, amongst other academic qualifications he has obtained the following with various institutions including the Harvard Kennedy School of Government: Executive Education on Leaders in Development: Managing Change in a Dynamic World, Master of Business Leadership, research report titled Mobile Technology Impacting Hospitality Industry SMMEs in South Africa, Finance for Non-financial Managers, Telecoms Mini MBA, Making Markets Work.

Mr Pongwana, an Umkhonto Wesizwe Military Veteran started his professional career as early as 1981 when he left South Africa for Lesotho, Mozambique and Angola, received military training in Angola and Russia, specialized in Military Radio Communications and Electronics Warfare. In 1985 was appointed Chief Communications Officer of Umkhonto Wesizwe (MK) in Angola until his return to South Africa in 1990.

Whilst building and mobilizing African National Congress (ANC) structures in Transkei as Deputy Regional Secretary and Regional Secretary of the South African Communist Party in Transkei from 1990 to February 1994, he completed his Bachelor of Accounting Science Degree.

In 1994 he was integrated into the South African National Defence Force as a Lieutenant Colonel in 5 Signal Regiment, a unit responsible for Electronics Warfare in the South African National Defence Force. On completion of all courses including the Senior Command and Staff Course in 1998, was promoted to Colonel and assumed command of 1 Signal Regiment in 1999, a unit whose elements are now deployed for peacekeeping operations like DRC, Burundi and Sudan.

He left the SANDF in May 2000 after an appointment as Deputy Director General – Telecommunications in the Department of Communications. Achievements in this position include the amendment of Telecommunications Act to facilitate Telkom’s listing, drafting and finalisation of Electronic Communications and Transactions Act and the drafting of existing Electronics Communications Act.

Mr Pongwana also worked for Vodacom in the following positions: Executive Head – Government Relations in 2005, Managing Executive: Regulatory Affairs in South Africa 2006, after having been  Executive Head– Government Relations for 6 months.

Amongst other important Senior position he has held over the years includes Chief Executive Officer for the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) and  Chief Director Beneficiary Support Services for the Department of Military Veterans.

Mr Pongwana’s duty is to lead the Ntinga and to provide leadership in the development and execution of the entity’s long-term strategy with a view to creating synergies within the entity, and serve as Accounting Officer in terms of the MFMA.
